History

Geduen Rabgay was the Royal Life Protector (Sungkhorp) of His Majesty Gongsa Ugyen Wangchuck (1862-1927). Shathong Goenpa in Kalizingkha, Dagana is believed to be his dharma seat. It is said that his students used to recite invocation prayers to the local deity of Shathong Goenpa, but the practice ceased after they dispersed and the texts were all lost to the fire when the temple got burnt. The temple was, however, restored in 2002.

Meditation Master (Drubpon) Pelden Jurmey says that we can see the whole village located in the east from this temple and thus, this place was called Sharthong.

There is also another version saying that Mahasiddha Shawaripa founded this temple and named it Sanga Choeling Goenpa, but after seeing a couple of shaw (reindeer) from this place, it came to be known as Shawthong, the place from where he saw the deer drinking water.

A 10-minute walk downhill takes us to a cave said to be the meditation cave of Drubthob Shawaripa. Going by this, one can conclude that Shawaripa preceded in founding the Shathong goenpa and Geduen Rabgay followed later.
