History
Pel Gangtey Sanga Chhoeling Goenpa is located in Phobjikha at 58 km drive from Wangduphodrang.
In the 15th century, Terton Pema Lingpa (1450-1521) visited and blessed many places for the propagation of Buddha dharma, especially the Peling Tradition. One day he arrived at Phobjikha and as he looked upwards towards the hill, he uttered a prophecy that in future his esoteric teachings will flourish from this hill. As a sign of devotion, he picked some grains from a farmer and spread them into space. At that instant he attended, one umzey, Drukpa Kuendue asked Pema Lingpa when exactly that would happen. To that, Pema Lingpa said that it will not happen in this lifetime, but in the next generation. True to this, his son Thuksey Dawa Gyeltshen’s (1499-1586) son, Gyalsey Pema Thinley (1564-1642) established the Gangtey Sanga Chhoeling Goenpa in 1613 AD. Gyalsey Pema Thinley’s reincarnation started the tradition of Gangteng Trulku.
The second Gangteng Trulku Tenzin Lekpai Dendup (1645-1726) expanded by building a bigger tsuklhakhang that lasted for the next 400 years after which the wood and walls gave way to decay. The 9th Gangteng Trulku, H.E. Rigdzin Kunzang Pema Namgyel (b. 1955- ) started the restoration works to their present glory in 2002 and completed in 2008. The grand consecration ceremony was presided over by the trio of reincarnations of the Father-Son-Grandson (Pema Lingpa’s reincarnation Sungtrul Rimpoche, Thuksey Dawa’s reincarnation Lhalung Thuksey Rimpoche and Gyalsey Pema Thinley’s reincarnation Gangteng Trulku) on 10th October 2008. It was also graced by Their Majesties, the 4th and the 5th Kings of Bhutan. Other distinguished guests including generous patrons were also present.
