History

The sacred site of Ugyenphu is located 2 days walk from Tamina village under Toedwang gewog of Punakha. One route goes through Tagmo Damchu and the other from Shelngana through Datong Goenpa. Though short, the route from Tagmo Damchu is now difficult to penetrate as no human and cattle have used it for many years.

Retired Toedwang Gup Rinchen says that Pagar Lam Dargo Dorji, while at the residence of Thimphu Dzongpon Kunzang Thinley read one guidebook containing the history and future prophecy of Ugyen Ney. According to the book which later got perished when the zimchung caught fire, the name of the sacred site appears as Gangti Seyphu and its sacredness is equivalent to visiting Bodhgaya. In the past, the people of Tagmo Damchu used to gather here on the 10th day of the second month to conduct feast offerings.

According to Rinchen, the sacred site is in the shape of a temple in the middle of a forest and Ugyenphu resembles a parasol with Yaechu and Rongchu flowing from left and right as if offering water. This became a holy site after Guru Rimpoche meditated and blessed it.

At the entrance, one can see a stone bell, ornamental silken frills and hanging pendants. To the right of the meditation, the cave is the holy water with Guru’s kitchen nearby. In the biography of Gyalsey Tenzin Rabgay (1638 – 1696), it is mentioned that he suffered from malaria while in Punakha. In his vision, a girl descended from the hill of Shelnga carrying the holy water and offered it to him. He drank it and immediately got relieved. Therefore, this holy water has curative powers.

If we spend nights here, it is said that one can hear the sounds of blowing clarinets and trumpets. A short climb from the cave, one reaches another small cave known for weighing virtue and vices. If one has more vices (defilements) you cannot pass through and some lams and monks must perform libation rituals. Following the stream that flows from behind the cave, one finds a bathtub, but taking bath in it is restricted for reasons unknown. Those who have attended birth or death events and are not cleansed and are still defiled should avoid pilgrimage to this holy site, otherwise, the guardian deities will be annoyed and bring down storms and other misfortunes.
