History

Chapcha Tshamdrak Goenpa under Chukha Dzongkhag was established by Je Ngawang Drukpa (1682-1748). Behind the monastery, we can see one meditation cave. It was used by one Drubthob Uthoen Sangay as his winter place. He was practising at Dakarla Bjagoe Tsho, but in winter it would snow and become cold. So, he used the cave behind the Tshamdrak Goenpa. Drubthob Uthoen Sangay was the nephew of Drikung Chopa Rinchen Pel.

Though it can not be ascertained, a senior citizen of Tshamdrak village, Ap Sonam says that Drubthob Uthoen is said to have married a lady from this place and their son Drubthob Ngawang Dorji was born.
At the age of 17 Ngawang Dorji fell sick and to overcome it, he went to take refuge under the feet of Dongkorla Trulku Tashi Dorji with whom he stayed for 20 years till he was 37. He received many secret pith instructions and as advised by his master, returned to Tshamdrak and built the present two-storied temple.

Shortly after he returned to Tshamdrak, a nephew, Ngawang Drukpa was born. He performed the child’s sanctification rites. As a part of the rites, Lam threw some rice into the air. Some rice got stuck on the head of the child. It was taken as a good omen that the child will uphold dharma and benefit sentient beings. The child was named Ngawang Drukpa.
Je Ngawang Drukpa used the same cave that was used by Drubthob Uthoen. He made Garuda his tutelary deity and deeply contemplated him. As a result, he was able to see the form of Chungdu and discuss his concerns. In one instance, Chungdu asked Lama where he should anchor the stallion to which lama said, do it here. Instantly Chungdu made a hole in a rock with his finger and tied the rope. This can be still seen at this sacred site.

One day, the two discussed looking for some patrons. Chungdu said he will fly around until his wings got tired. Lama said ok and hung a stone each on the wings and chungdu flew. He could cover only the villages of Chapcha, Bongo and Getana. That is why today, the people of these three villages are by default the patrons of Tshamdrak Goenpa.
