History
Zhabjethang lhakhang of Chhoekhor Toed is located in the center of the beautiful valley of Chhoekhor Toed 15 kms away from Bjakar Dzong. It would take 4 hours on foot.
It is a retreat centre of Guru Rimpoche who visited in the 8th century and constructed a temple. It needs no mention to consider sacred. Later in the 15th century, Trulku Chokden Gonpo, the reincarnation of Terton Dorji Lingpa renovated the temple once. In the 20th century, one businessman from Trongsa, Tshongpon Dolong renovated and extended the height. The statues of Guru Tsokhorsum (Guru and two consorts- usually Yeshey Tshogyel and Mendarawa) were sculptured by the famous Nepali craftsman Pentsa Deva during the 4th Desi Gyalsey Tenzin Rabgay. On the old ground floor of Lhakhang, we can see the clear images of Guru and Khandro’s footprints. The outside surrounding too is filled with numerous scared stones still preserved well. In all, there are 108 footprints because of which the Lhakhang certainly got its name Zhabjeythang Lhakhang. In the open ground, we still see traces of retrieving a knife while subduing a demon disguised as black yak, probably used to chop the head and skin.
