History

Emanation of Lhacham Pema Sel, Terton Pema Lingpa (1450-1521) was born in Bumthang, Tang Chel Baridrang to father Dondup Zangpo and mother Pema Dolma.

At the age of 25, he met Guru Rimpoche in person and received a guide to open 108 hidden secret sites including the Mebar Tsho from where he retrieved many important treasures. Pema Lingpa greatly aspired to construct one religious centre. Choekhor Deb knew about this and supported it by granting a beautiful open place. Pema Lingpa founded the Tamzhing Lhuendup Chhoeling Monastery in 1501 AD in this very spacious area.
