History

National Memorial Chorten
Under the patronage of Her Royal Grand Mother Ashi Phuentsho Choden Wangchuck, the National Memorial Chorten was built by the Royal Government of Bhutan in 1973 corresponding to 16th Rabjung, to honour the memory of His Late Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. It is located at the side of Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital and above the head office of the Royal Bhutan Police. It is also called as National Memorial Stupa. Today, it has become the main place that attracts young and old people for their prostration and offers. Indeed, the stupa was designed according to the treasure text of Dujom Lingpa, the outer is designed in the style of Jangchup Chorten whereas the interior is the Vajrakilaya, Drukpa Lineage and the Gongdue combined. The Vajra Kilaya Drupchen (grand ceremony) is held at the National Memorial Chorten.
