History
Rinchen Bumpa is a sacred site where Guru Rimpoche visited and meditated for three months. It has been blessed as a sacred site to accumulate merits by all devotees who would visit it in the future. Simply viewing it from afar, hearing about it from others, and just remembering it would generate merits. It is no less sacred than the same famous Za Rinchen Bumpa of Tibet.
It was first discovered by the great master Drimey Ozer aka Kuenkhen Longchen Rabjampa (1308-1363) and later Terton Pema Lingpa too visited it and meditated here. Terton Ratna Lingpa too had recommended this site for a pilgrimage. The tall stone awe strikingly standing in the shape of a self-formed stupa or zangdopelri is the Utse (central pinnacle) and takes around 5 minutes to do one round of circumambulation. The moment one reaches there and sees it, a spontaneous faith and devotion arise. It is said that the stupa has 100 thousand priceless jewellery and precious objects (Rinchen-རིན་ཆེན) piled up (Pungpa-སྤུངས་པ) inside. Therefore, because of the force of their virtue one who visits and sees them effortlessly feels their power of blessing. By the same token, it is named Rinchen Pungpa (རིན་ཆེན་སྤུངས་པ) but gradually pronounced Rinchen Bumpa and misspelt as Rinchen Bumpa- རིན་ཆེན་བུམ་པ།. However, the certain old catalogue also mentions it as Rinchen Bumpa- རིན་ཆེན་འབུམ་པ་ deserving a thorough clarification.
The well arranged guide to sacred Rinchen Bumpa (རིན་ཆེན་འབུམ་པའི་གནས་ཡིག་ལེགས་པར་བཀོད་པ་) says the following.
To the south of the Great sacred site, Khenlung lies Rinchen Bumpa. Behind it, the hill looks ordained by multi-coloured silk. The base is triangular with a fire pit to conduct burnt offerings. The streams look as if being offered as yoenchab, other hills appear like butter cakes, Ridges are like strings of priceless ornaments, Far to the east, lies Singye Dzong, Aaja Ney to the south, Choezangphu in the west, Lhachen Khari to the north, In the northeast is Tajukthang. Closer to Rinchen Bumpa, are Pema Tse in the east, Khamphu in the south, Tsitra Nying in the west, Chhoegyalung in the north, Pelsumphu in the southeast, Chhoedzongphu in the south-west, Mangdephu in the north-west. Again little closer in its east, lies Trashi Choeding, Badingphu in the south, Chuedreyphu in the north. Surrounded by all these many sacred sites, the Utse as mentioned in the beginning is so towering and overlooking all others that it earned the name Utse. The surrounding hills and trees have the gesture of bowing towards the Utse signifying their respect for it.
The guidebook says:
Whoever performs feast offerings here, will gain the taste of contemplation.
Whoever offers flowers and incense, will be reborn pretty with a sweet odour.
Whoever offers water and food, will earn servants and wealth.
Whoever offers songs and music, will have a melodious voice like Brahma.
Whosoever serves this monastery will enjoy wealth for countless lifetimes.
To be born in the abode of Pema (Guru Rimpoche) and Ngayab Ling, there is no doubt.
One will attain Buddhahood in this very lifetime.
By simply dwelling in this place, one can achieve a rainbow body.
For the devotees, this is the place to seek blessing for long life, wealth, fame, lineage, cattle and food,
And one will also receive supreme and the general accomplishments.
Oh! Such a sacred site, how marvellous!
It is said that Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rimpoche has advised the people of Kurtoe to construct either a big or small statue of Guru Rimpoche at Ney Rinchen Bumpa if they aspire to grow rich. One foreign lady donated Nu. 50,000/- with which Kurtoeps installed one statue of Guru Rimpoche. True to it, the region experienced timely rainfall, peace and harmony.
Ridam or Ladam is a system of restricting people from visiting holy sites usually imposed starting from the time of plantation till harvest. It differs from place to place. Strict Ridam for Rinchen Bumpa is for one month, from the 10th day of the 3rd lunar month till the 10th day of the 4th lunar month.
Before the ridam starts, each household contributes a variety of items as per their convenience like meat, butter, rice, libation wine, etc to be offered to the local deity Ap Terdag. After propitiating Ap Terdag, Ridam starts and no one is allowed to tour except the two caretakers. It is also the time for the local deity Ap Terdag to stay in meditation and therefore, even a slight disturbance will trigger his wrath. If someone does not comply with this and somehow manages to sneak and defile the holy site or make noises, these are sure to bring untimely rain, hailstone, storm or wild animals in the fields and many other misfortunes. High ranking officials are also humbly requested not to attempt a visit. If someone does not comply with this tradition and culture and keeps on persuading a permit to visit, then the whole village would come together and place all the unforeseen risks on him/her and shall be responsible to compensate the loss of the year.
From the 10th day of the 4th lunar month till the 9th lunar month or till harvest is over, ridam is a bit relaxed and those who are sick and aspire to seek blessings from Rinchen Bumpa or offer butter lamps, they may do so, but many would not dare to go simply to avoid blames from the community because they fear that weather might unexpectedly change and become wild.
In the past, Rinchen Bumpa was not exposed and visitors coming for pilgrimage or to offer butter lamps were so rare. Today, it has become so famous as a wish-fulfilling holy site. When Ridam restriction is lifted, many devotees would come for retreat and remain in prayers. Some come for pilgrimage and do monetary donations to the temple which has helped install all required amenities. Some purposely come to offer prayers for their promotions and achievements or to avert unforeseen misfortunes. With increasing evidence of success after seeking the blessings of Rinchen Bumpa, people have developed faith and reverence for the holy site and visitors are increasing year after year.
To reach the holy site of Rinchen Bumpa under Kurtoe gewog, we have to drive along the farm road for 2 hours from Lhuntse Dzong till Dungkar and walk for 2 hours from Dungkar till Chagzom village. From Chagzom, we have to walk uphill and climb cliffs which would take 2-5 hours depending on the speed and ability to walk.
It takes 5 hours to tour around the Rinchen Bumpa sites thoroughly.
Inside the meditation cave, there is land hell and sky hell in deep darkness and we have to carry the torch.
