History

Ani Choeten Zangmo, the granddaughter of Terton Pema Lingpa built the Drametse Lhakhang in the 16th century. Ani Chorten Zangmo fled towards east from Bumthang to escape the marriage proposal from a local king and found the site suitable for meditation and named it as “Drametse” which literally means the “Peak without enemies”.

Drametse Ngacham(the dance of drums), the renowned masked dance practiced throughout the country originated from Drametse. Ani Cheten Zangmo’s brother Lam Kunga Gyeltshen in his visionary state reached Zangdo Pelri (paradise) of Guru Rinpoche where he witnessed the performance of the dance. Upon return to the human realm, he introduced the tradition of this dance. Other mask dances like Peling Tercham(Treasure Dances) are also believed to have originated from Drametse.

Drametse is considered as the main seat of Terton Lingpa’s lineage and also the religious and cultural centre for eastern Bhutan. The lhakhang also serves as a library and has a good number of books on Buddhism from across the world.
