History
UGYEN GURU LHAKHANG
Ugyen Guru Lhakhang is located on the promontory of hill above Bondey in Paro; it is situated at a distance of about 16 km drive uphill from the Agriculture Machinery Centre (AMC) at Bondey.
Guru Rinpoche had visited the site where now stands the temple in the 8th Century; there, he subdued the malicious demon and meditated for some days. Terton Sherab Mebar, later on, constructed a temple on the site and installed as its inner relics, all treasures that he had revealed from the Nub Tshonag Pata Lake.
Later on, Drupthob Tenzin Zangpo took charge of this temple and he had not only flourished the Tantrayana teachings there but also expanded the temple further. One day, while he was erecting the statue of Guru Rinpoche, the statue is said to have spoken to him and moreover, he had witnessed many miraculous incidences; from then on the temple came to be known as Ugyen Guru Lhakhang, named after the statue.
The Ugyen Guru Lhakhang was converted into a monastic school following the advice of the Je Khenpo Trulku Jigme Choedra and Her Majesty the queen mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck.
The 2011 earthquake had impacted the temple quite badly that it was reconstructed in 2015; and the restoration work took two complete years. It was restored to a two storied temple: in the ground floor temple, among many others, the main image is the statue of speaking Guru as it is locally known; in the temple on the first floor, the main image is the statue of Terton Sherab Mebar.
At present, there are 16 novice monks studying there under the guidance of ex-neten Lam Singye Rinchen, who is also in-charge of the overall care of the temple.
