History
A sanctifying Bartsham Chador Lhakhang is located in a serene place on the top of Bartsham village overlooking the beautiful view of Galing, Changmey and Bidung. it is about 24 kms drive from the Dzongkhag head office. Today the lhakhang is headed by Lam Ugyen Namdrel and it caters religious education for almost seventy monks from various villages of Bartsham gewog. Commonly called as Meme Chador, the Chador statue is the main statue of the lhakhang which was said to be brought from the palace of Khardung Gyalpo of Pemagatshel. It was said that over centuries ago, Khardung Gyalpo got the statue from the little lake named Yuetsho (turquoise –colored lake) as a natural gift by the mermaid of the lake which was the treasure discovered by Terton Ridzin Pema Lingpa. Then the statue has become the main relic in the palace of Khardung Gyalpo. Khardung Gyalpo had many children of whom three of them were sons. One of his sons were married to a daughter of Yangkhar Khochey of bartsham, Trashigang. As a token of gift or wealth, his father granted his wish of taking the statue as his share to yangkhar khochey at Bartsham. No one knows the exact year, however it was said that the statue of Meme Chador reached yangkhar around noon on the 7th day of 6th month on the lunar calendar.
Sangag Thegchog Choeling Lhakhang in Bartsham(widely known as the Chador Lhakhang) is an hour’s drive from Trashigang. The Lhakhang stands on top of a ridge that commands a spectacular view of the surrounding villages in northern Trashigang. The Lhakhang is known for its thumb-size replica of Chana Dorji(Vajrapani), popularly known as Meme Chador by the local people.
The monastery holds the seats of Dudjom Tersar tradition headed by the Tersar lineage, Dudjom Rinpoche. The lineage is followed by Rinpoche’s students notably by Lam Pema Wangchen and Late Lam Kunzang Wangdi(Lam Nyinku).
The Lhakhang has been expanded and renamed as Sangag Thegchog Choeling.
