History

Bhutan is a country visited by Guru Rimpoche in person and through his supernatural power and there is no place in this country left without his visit and blessings. He left many religious treasures hidden in the mountains, cliffs, oceans, lakes, rocks, etc.
Choe Drak in Bumthang Chumey is one of the sacred sites of Guru and belongs to the group of 4 cliffs (draks). Its exterior looks like a pile of religious texts. Inside, hanging objects are looking like religious items. Based on this, it is called Choe Drak.

Another version says that Choeje Lorepa made this cave as his religious seat, thus, earning the name Choeje Drak.

There is a throne where Guru sat. There are 22 different treasures inside. There are stories shared by elders that doors used to get opened to the fortunate ones who could get inside and see the treasures.
In the 12th century, Gyelwa Lorepa Drakpa Wangchuk (1175-1250), a disciple of Tsangpa Jarey Yeshi Dorji and Dharma Sangay Onrey meditated in this cave and became accomplished becoming the centre from where many other accomplished Drukpa masters originated. Therefore, the site came to be known as Choeje Drak.

Choeje Drak was under the administration of Punakha Dratshang and appointed a Lam with the title Choedrak Lam. Choedrak Lam is one of the four Principal Lams. However, today it is being looked after by Trongsa Dratshang and Choedrak Lam is also appointed from Trongsa Dratshang.
