History

Dechen Lhundrup Lhakhang which lies in Tsirang Gewog is 24 km away from Damphu town at a place called Jongtoe. It was the only Lhakhang in Tsirang Dzongkhag some 300 to 400 years ago though nobody can ascertain. Therefore, it is also the oldest and the most sacred one according to some senior citizens of the locality. It is believed to have been built by Gyalwa Tenzin Drakpa and Gyalsey Pema Thinley.

Inside the Lhakhang, there is a box believed to have been possessed by Dza Tsen, the local deity. Opening this mysterious box is strictly forbidden. Initially, it was housed in Sasung (Tsirangtoed) Dzong, but after the Dzong fell into ruins, it appears to have been shifted to the Lhakhang.

This temple was taken care of by the native Tsirangpas since the time it came into existence, but later, people from other dzongkhags came and settled in the gewog as a part of the resettlement scheme of His Majesty the 4th King. Now it has mixed of old natives and new re-settlers as patrons. For the sustenance and security of the temple, the system of appointing a Lam cum caretaker has been initiated by the Tsirang Dzongkhag’s Namgyel Chhoeling Dratshang.

A natural disaster like an earthquake inflicted cracks on the walls and the woods were also weakened posing a threat to the temple. In 2016, the gewog administration and Lam Zoepa Tenzin coordinated and completed the restoration works. The newly restored temple was consecrated by the 70th Je Khenpo, Trulku Jigme Choda and named Dechen Lhundrup Lhakhang.

At a distance of 10 minutes away from the temple, we find the palace of the Sasungpa, the local governor in ruins. From here, a little uphill, there is a holy site attributed to Guru Rimpoche and a stupa with Vajra Guru Mantra carved on the stone slates. In the direction of north-west from here, we can also view the Tha Namkhai Dzong, The Frontier Sky Fortress in Lajab gewog under Dagana Dzongkhag.
