History

Dechen Phodrang Central Monastic School
The current Dechen Phodrang Monastery was bequeathing of Do-Ngyoen (Fortress of Do-Ngyoen) established by Lam Lhapa in the 12th Century. In the year 1641, it taken over by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel and was named as Tashi Choekyid Phodrang. Later, the Dzong was entirely damaged by fire leaving only the Dzong-Juk Lhakhang (residence of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel), and therefore named as Dechen Phodrang. In the year 1772, Trashi Chhoedzong was shifted to the current site.
