History

The sacred Dechen Phodrang in Boomdeling gewog under Trashiyangtse was discovered by Lama Karma Jamyang. It looks like the western nirvana (ནུབ་ཕྱོགས་བདེ་བ་ཅན་གྱི་ཞིང་ཁམས་). So, it is called Dechen Phodrang. Below it, is a village called Wogmanang, meaning the second Dechen Phodrang.

Dechen Phodrang is a holy site of Guru Rimpoche and is considered a branch of the supremely holy site of Pema Ling.
According to 58-year-old Gomchen Tenzin Thinley from Womanang Shiling, to the right of Dechen Phodrang, is a ridge called Shawa la. Towards Shawa La’s right is Rigsum Goenpa. In the front are, Pelri Goenpa and Zangpup Tse. To the left of Dechen Phodrang is a hill in the shape of a wish-fulfilling jewel and it has a hilltop called Magzor (battle hill) dedicated to warding off enemies from external forces. Dechen Phodrang lies on the front of a ridge resembling a sleeping elephant on the left side of Magzor.

As per the pilgrimage guide, one visit to Dechen Phodrang Ney is equivalent to doing a pilgrimage to the middle part of Tsari Ney and has the merit of reciting 12 million times Benza Guru. Dechen Phodrang is considered the twin of Monkha Shri Dzong of Lhuntse. One can see here the sacred body print of Guru Rimpoche among many others.

Dechen Phodrang can be reached by taking the 10 km farm road from Yangtse to the village of Shiling or Womanang Primary School. From here, it takes one hour on foot through a beautiful gentle path without many ups and downs.

Today, the ground floor of Dechen Phodrang Lhakhang houses the crag that contains the kuje (bodypaint) of Guru Rimpoche. 36 years ago, there wasn’t any crack developed on the bodypaint, but today we see a small crack at the side and no one has any explanation. Till 2007, the temple was small and had two storeys, but given its importance, Royal Government has enlarged it and made it three-storied with much grandeur.

As mentioned in the travel guide of Dechen Phodrang called “མ་ཧཱ་གུ་རུའི་སྦས་གནས་གཡང་རྩེ་འོ་མ་ནང་བདེ་ཆེན་ཕོ་བྲང་གི་གནས་ཡིག་” the Koenyer (Caretaker) Tshering Tenzin introduced other various sites. They are recorded and photographed as follows:

The kuje of Dechen Phodrang which is on the ground floor is the principal site of all holy sites of Dechen Phodrang and is considered a wish-fulfilling one that brings achievement in our aspirations. Spending one night here would be worthy of us considering a “wisdom holder or wisdom receiver” (རིག་འཛིན). Such is the merit of Kuje of Dechen Phodrang.

The holy water, drubchu is also powerful in transforming us spiritually. Even a sinner can be cleansed of all his sins by drinking this holy water.
