History
At Sha Dangchu Dorji Gur, Guru Rimpoche is said to have stayed for three months. Dorji Gur refers to the whole Dangchu area which is also known as Dhendrup Chhoeling.
According to one treasure text, it says, “At the holy site of Dorji Gur, I supplicate to the all-knowing (Kuenkhen) Peljor Dorji”.
The holy site of Dorji Gur was founded by one Kuenkhen Peljor Dorji in the 15th century. He belonged to the lineage of Lama Choiying, son of Terton Dorji Lingpa. Dorji Lingpa reincarnated as Trulku Chogden Goenpo. It was Trulku Chogden Goenpo who instructed Kuenkhen Peljor Dorji to construct the temple at Dangchu Dorji aka Dendup Chhoeling. Accordingly, on the waist of a hilltop with rivers flowing from the right and left, a three-storied temple was constructed, but later, in the 19th century, it was destroyed by an earthquake only to be restored into two storeys.
In 2007, one Khenpo Pasang, a descendant of Terton Dorji Lingpa established a school for Dorling tradition, but again the temple suffered a downfall. Between 2012 till 2014, restoration works were carried out. In eight months, the physical structure was complete.
After the restoration work was complete, His Holiness the 70th Je Khenpo, Trulku Jigme Choda issued a decree that a goenzin dratshang be established and consequently it was named Dangchu Dendup Chhoeling Dorling Goenzin Dratshang.
Discovered as treasure by the founder of the monastery, the mask of the Ox headed Yama is the main inner relic. The story has it that when Lam Kuenkhen Peljor Dorji looked through the window, he saw an object illuminating the bank of the Dangchu River. It happened for three nights.
The annual Bumdhey falls on, the 29th and 30th day of the 5th Lunar month and the 1st day of the 6th month, for three days. During one of the annual rituals, on the 29th day, more than 40 sponsors and some monks conducted prayers to Gonpo Maning as a part of Kangso and offered nyendar. Suddenly the floor crashed and fell on the down floor. However, not even a small injury happened to anyone. People derived so much faith that the deity is so powerful and protective.
