History

Tachu Goenpzin Dratshang or Takchu Goenpa is located at a distance of 8km from Dumchog village. It is connected by a motorable farm road. It has been built on the top of the Chenrezig hill, the centre of the Meri Puensum of Haa. The temple is known by various names based on its geography and other beliefs. It is sometimes called Ta Chung Goenpa, an abbreviation of Ta Cha Chung sum derived from the belief that this place is the abode of Tadrin (Hayagrivha), Chanadorji (Vajra Pani) and Jachung (Garuda).

Another name is Tagchug Goenpa derived from the hill behind the temple in the shape of the God of Wealth (Namthoesey – Vaisravana or Vessavana). It is said that the people of this place are always wealthy.

Yet another name is Tag Chu (Tag- Tiger, Chu- water). There is a stream above the temple emerging from a rock resembling a tiger. Thus, it is a blend of Tag and Chu.

One Sangay Jamtsho was the Head Lam of Dalingkot Dzong which was captured by the British in 1773. After its capture, Lam moved further interior and established Tagchu Goenpa. Later, the Fifth Zhabdrung Sungtrul, Chogley Trulku Yeshi Ngodrup (1851-1917) stayed here in meditation and preached to the locals who flocked around for his blessings. He built the new Tagchu Lhakhang in 1894 and still contains his bedroom called Chogley Zimchung.

Fourth Zhabdrung Thuktrul, Jigme Norbu (1831-1861) visited the old Lhakhang built by Lam Sangay Jamtsho and stayed here for some time. He composed one invocation prayer for the deity Ta Chung. Guardian Tachung’s consort, Monmo is believed to be residing just below the temple.
The formally used and accepted name for the temple is Tagchu (རྟག་ཕྱུག –always rich) to symbolize that the people of Tagchu Goenpa, Lungsungkha, Drongoen, Kyiri, and Dumcho aka Doethrang receive continuous blessing from the god of wealth, a naturally formed geography of Nam Thoesey.
