History
Kyichu Lhakhang
A Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo constructed the Kyichu temple in the 8th century when he constructed the 108 temples, which he is said to have constructed in one day to suppress a demoness. According to legend, he built those temples on the geomantic principles of a demoness lying across whole of Tibet including Bhutan, who created an obstruction for Buddhism from flourishing. Two of those temples fall within Bhutan; one is the Jampa Lhakhang in Bumthang and the other one is the Kyichu temple in Paro. The Kyichu temple was constructed on the left foot of the demoness and Jampa Lhakhang on the left knee.
In the hagiography of Guru Rinpoche, he had mentioned about many sacred treasures concealed at the Kyichu temple. The main inner image of the temple is the statue of the crowned Buddha Shakyamuni surrounded with other bodhisattvas regarded; and erected during the time of the establishment of the temple. Her Majesty the Queen mother Gyalyum Kesang Choden Wangchuck pioneered the renovation of the ancient temple in 1968 by adding other temples attached around the main one.
