History
Simtokha Dzong
Simtokha Dzong ‘Dzong’ means “castle-monastery”/Sinmo Dokha or Sangak Zabdhon Phodrang “Palace of the Profound Meaning of Secret Mantras” was built in 1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in 11th Rabjung. It is the first of its kind to be built in Bhutan. The dzong is at a strategic location on a prominent ridge above the Thimphu-Phuentsholing highway. It is an important historical monument like Zhabdrung and Desi Jigme Namgyel (father of the First Druk Gyalpo). Upon inviting Chabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche in the Iron Ox Year 1961 corresponding to the 16th Rabjung, the dzong was established as traditional sciences monastic institution. Later, the institute was shifted to Jampeling (place above the dzong) and started the primary school for the monastic body. Today, it is upgraded as a monastic institution. The Ministry of Home and Culture Affairs of Bhutan also carried out major renovation to the Dzong.
