History

Thrigoen Pema Woelling Monastery/Shedra (College for Buddhist studies) is located in the holy valley of Thrichu Goenpa, Tongzhang under the Trashi Yangtse district. It was a Gomdey (Monastery for lay Buddhist practitioners) headed by late Geshey Pekar until Rinpoche converted it into Shedra in 2000.

The name Thrichu Goenpa is derived from Thrichu (holy water). In the 8th month of the lunar calendar, there is one occasion related to Buddhism, the Blessed Rainy Day. On this day, we can glimpse the Thrichu coming out from a pond where there is no source. Therefore, Thrichu meaning ‘Holy Water’, and Goenpa meaning ‘Monastery’, when it is combined together is called ‘Thrichu Goenpa’.

Before 300 years, His Eminence Tokden Sacha Sheri’s son His Eminence Aa Phoda Rinchen has started the Goenpa. The Goenpa is positioned on the hill that resembles the seated posture of Arya Tara (Gyelyum Jetsuen Dolma). Following his dharmic deeds, his followers continued the monastic institutions to upsurge their dharmic deeds. Thereafter, dharma flourished in the region.

Gayshey Pema Karpo and other Gaywai Shayngyen (Scholars) fled to Tibet to pursue the Buddhist philosophies. Later they came back to Goenpa. The scholars preached the lay monks, where dharma boosted in the region. The Scholars rebuilt the Lhakhang and renovated the Nagtens (Inner Relics) that was enclosed there and pioneered new Nangtens.

Owing to the collective fortunes of the local people, the His Eminence, Chabje Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche, one of the 25 principal disciples of the Guru Rinpoche was born in the locality. The Rinpoche gave multiple thoughts to spread and enhance Buddhism; Rinpoche has begun the reconstruction of an old temple into the three-storied temple in 1997 and completed it in 2000.

The Guru Nangsi Zilnoen along with Opame (Amitabha) and Chenrezig (Avalokitesvara) statues were installed. The mural paintings and other internal relics encircled for the benefit of devotees. On completion, Rinpoche consecrated the monastery. For the wonder of devotees, the newly built statue of Guru Nangsizilnoen grew by more than 4-5 inches.

The great deeds of the Rinpoche and the Scholars had helped the people of the locality and even other Buddhist followers to come up with a spiritual way of living. The Drubdey (Hermit) was also initiated there with 10 Drubdrapas (Hermitages).
