History

Zabden Choeling, the profound religious centre as the name suggests is located at an elevation of 2920 m above sea level and it is one of the four major temples in the Haa district. It is built on the hill of the island of Yangthang village. To reach the temple, we need to take the highway from Haa town towards Damthang. After 3 km we reach Yangthang village. Then taking the farm road for another 3 km we reach the Makha bridge. The temple sits 2 km away from this bridge.

According to Lho Druk Chhoejung written by the 69th Je Khenpo, Je Geshey Geduen Rinchen (1926-1997), this temple was built in the 17th century by one Buddhist Master Thinley Jamtsho, a disciple of Lam Choinying Jamtsho. Lam Choinying Jamtsho was the disciple of Lam Drakpa Jamtsho.
It is a double storied temple with the ground floor dedicated to Chenrezig and the top floor housing the statues of Buddha in the centre and Guru Rinpoche and Jampelyang by the left and right together called Choe Long Trul sum and the lam’s room. Recitation of billion times mani (the mantra of Aviloketeshvara) is also organized here. The temple was renovated in 2000 to its present grandeur.
